Things I Love Thursday - My Local Library!

I love books! Its sad to admit, but my only hobby, other than eating, it’s reading. And true nirvana for me involves doing both at the same time with a soda on the side, with a soda on the side.

My kids and I are trying very hard to actually make it to our local library this summer more than just once. We’ve been twice so we’re better than last year already. This last time I forced, I mean suggested politely, to my eldest son he get some classic reading material along with his science fiction weirdo books. He declined but I still checked out Treasure Island and Kidnapped for him and I will *force* him to read them.

I also decided to do a little experiment for myself. I checked out a book from a series I read every stinking week in elementary school, a Trixie Belden mystery. I’m just getting started on it, and so far it’s definitely more appropriate for a 10 year old girl. However, I’m enjoying this little trip down memory lane.

So I thought I would post what’s on our reading list currently and I hope you’ll give us some feedback, suggestions, etc!

I’m just reading my sappy, regency romances along with my Trixie Belden and The Mystery of Bob-White Cave. I also have Wisdom Hunter which a friend gave me that might make the trip to the family reunion this weekend with me.

Here's the kiddos lists:

Josh (14 year old – loves to read)
· Ark Angel and Snakehead, by Anthony Horowitze
· Treasure Island and Kidnapped, R.L. Stevenson (I am planning to read both of these as well)
· Eleven Thumps and the Gateway of Foo, Obert Skye (recommended by librarian..Josh says he’s not reading it which I think is a teenager way of rebelling just b/c mom picked it)

Jared (12 YO, sports enthusiast, reads b/c his parents makes him)
· Travel Team, Mike Lupica (we reserved Summer Ball but it wasn’t in and he’s already read this and when I suggested he re-read it he looked at me like I had two heads)

Josie (8 YO..likes to read but is still being forced more or less)
· Meet Josephina (American Girl series)
· Charlotte’s Web, E.B. White (I plan to re-read this as well)
· Midnight in the Dollhouse, Stover

Jill (pre-reader)
· Berenstain Bear books are her current favorite so we’ve got a bunch of those!

What are you/your family reading this summer? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Now I’m off to enjoy a few minutes of nirvana--some baked fries, a cold Mountain Dew, and my book!

Make sure you head on over to Diaper Diaries and see what everybody else is loving this Thursday!

My 5 yo and I just joined a Mother-Daughter book club through our library. I am loving our book and seeing her enthusiasm. It is called the Secret School. It is a chapter book probably more for 2nd or 3rd grade readers.

OMG, I used to LOVE the Trixie Belden books! They were way better than Nancy Drew, to me! I forgot all about those books, and I just realized that I now have a dog who I named Trixie. You think it was a subconscious bow to Trixie Belden? ;)

Nicki, I felt the same way about Nancy Drew books..something was just a little too perfect or something not sure. She just didn't appeal to me like Trixie did! You should pick one up, it's kind of neat to look back..the book I'm reading was originally published in 1963!!!!

Easy there. You are stepping all over my Nancy Drew loving toes.
But a post about books. Ohh, I knew you were my very BFF for a reason. This one was right up my alley, and the kids reading. One of the most beautiful sights in the world is a child with a book.
Keep up the totally awesome parenting!

I love our public library too...except the part where we have to pay for our card because we live in the country :)
